Life often marches on relentlessly, seemingly oblivious to our flagging efforts to keep up. It piles on the complexities - sorrow and joy felt in a single moment, pain and anguish that lasts for days, as well as the ache of longing that drives many of us to pound against the prison bars of our own limitations. From this crucible of complexity, DRU. Jewelry came forth as a means for Thea Miller to infuse meaning into the mysteries of life. Each piece of jewelry Thea creates manifests the struggle, while at the same time offering hope and solace. The most poignant of these pieces is the Nightingale Conservatory Signet.

The Nightingale and Its Gilded Cage

The Nightingale Conservatory Signet features a locket that slides open, revealing a secret chamber. However, before the ring reveals its secret, it weaves an ancient story of hope and freedom. Front and center, we see a nightingale soaring free toward what could be the moon (although it's really a bezel-set diamond). Along the shaft of the ring, we see feathers and more diamonds, symbols of the celestial and emblems of the gods. Of course, there is more to the story. While the bird in flight draws attention to its soaring freedom, and the feathers call to mind the presence and protection of the gods, upon opening the chamber you realize the struggle. For inside you see a gilded cage, the limiting bars of captivity and oppression that once held this beautiful bird in isolation. Suddenly, the flight of nightingale, with its melancholy song and its powerful wings, takes on a whole new level of meaning. Inspired at first by the magic and mystery of flight, Thea drew deeper upon the words of Emily Dickinson to capture the essence of this ring - "Hope is a thing with feathers/that perches in the soul." The soaring nightingale now demonstrates the fight she fought to escape the confines of her gilded cage. Hers is a flight of monumental significance, one that resonates with women around the world.

Thea Miller Calls it Her Favorite

She recently chose to rename the ring the Gilded Cage, because several women shared unique stories with familiar undercurrents. "I think that is one of the reasons it is my favorite. There is not just ONE interpretation, which is true of most complicated things in this world," she told me. "We all have our different perspectives and experiences that frame our interpretations. Some women buy it as a reminder of “HOPE.”  Others see it as a symbol of “FREEDOM.” I think for many women it is this theme that resonates the loudest."

Sharing in the Creative Journey

Perhaps a more compelling reason Thea Miller calls the Nightingale Conservatory Signet her favorite stems from the collaborative process that birthed it. Together, she and her dear friend, photographer Alain Simić, brought to life their shared vision. In birthing the Gilded Cage Signet, they created a meaningful story in iconic images which gives expression to freedom and hope. Thea found working together with her close friend a "deeply rewarding" experience which allowed her "to see the fruits of not only our labor, but also of our friendship." Alain Simić works closely with Thea and other independent jewelers to tell their stories in photographs. He loves using powerful visual images to tell the unique and personal stories of these artists and their brands. (source)
