Modern Polish couples continue the tradition of throwing a lavish party to celebrate their engagement. However, many have adopted the western custom of preparing a surprise and intimate proposal beforehand.

Traditional Polish Engagement Party

Polish engagement and wedding customs appear to be among the most enduring of the European nuptial customs. For many centuries, a Polish couple announced their engagement with a lavish party thrown for family and close friends. To this day, this party takes place at either the home of the bride's or the groom's parents. Since the families rarely know each other before the engagement, whoever hosts the party takes pains to impress the other's family. For this reason, the hosts arrange for a lavish feast, including a savory dinner with delectable desserts and plenty of drink. During the party, family members are encouraged to get to know each other and enjoy the festivities together. Their presence and enjoyment of the party indicates their acceptance of the upcoming nuptials. In times past, a Polish engagement party included a small ceremony which mirrored the future wedding ceremony. During this time, a man would offer his bride-to-be her engagement ring in front of their party guests. However, now many couples have adopted a more western western approach.

A Touch of the West

Today, Polish couples often enjoy a private proposal. During this time, the man asks for his sweetheart's hand by offering her an engagement ring. Following this private interchange, the couple then shares their news with family and friends. Then, either the bride's parents or the groom's offer to host the engagement party. Despite this shift in tradition, the Polish engagement party remains the central celebration of a couple's decision to marry. Now, Polish men enjoy the freedom to propose in private or to present their sweethearts with a ring in front of family and friends. ~Angela Magnotti Andrews
