Glenn Lehrer designed this magnificent butterfly brooch. The jewelry artist carved a freeform black opal for its body. Each antenna features a bezel-set black opal cabochon. The wings and body feature pave setting of 136 round mixed-cut sapphires, 76 round mixed-cut tsavorites, and 160 round brilliant cut white diamonds. This brooch by Glenn Lehrer certainly exhibits the artist's skill as a designer and gem carver.
Lehrer Designs
Sharon and Glenn Lehrer founded Lehrer Designs in Larkspur, California, in 1981. Tot this day, they offer the distinctive services of a master gem cutter and a master goldsmith under one roof. Over the past forty years, Lehrer Designs has been recognized as a leader in gemstone artistry. As seen in the butterfly brooch above, Lehrer's jewelry offers original design concepts paired with precision faceting and masterful carving techniques. Their stunning designs offer museum-worthy heirlooms to anyone who owns one. Perhaps one of their most exciting offerings to date is the patented TorusRing™ Gemstone. The TorusRing™ is a carved and faceted gemstone with a central cylindrical portion removed. This cut results in a beautiful play of light, as well as astonishing brilliance. To add to even more beauty, Lehrer often sets a second gemstone in the center of a TorusRing™ stone. The artist based the design on the torus energy pattern observed time and again in nature. Consider the eye of a hurricane, the expanding and contracting iris of the human eye, and the glowing rings of Saturn. The TorusRing™ cut assumes this archetypal shape in gemstone brilliance and allows the wearer to carry it with them everywhere.Glenn Lehrer
Glenn Lehrer encountered his first gemstone in his mid-20s. His brother gave him a small quartz crystal. On this occasion, the moment he touched it Glenn felt a surge of energy run into his hand, up his arm, and into his head. Following this experience, Lehrer became hooked on the metaphysical aspects of raw gemstones. In addition, he longed to coax even more beauty out of them by faceting and carving them. Without the benefit of a mentor, Lehrer depended upon his own ingenuity to learn the art of carving and faceting. He purchased the necessary equipment and began experimenting. This free-form experimentation allowed him to develop techniques and cuts the industry had never seen, like the TorusRing™. Eventually, Lehrer sought relationships with European jewelers to further his skills and develop a network within the industry. In about his 15th year, Glenn Lehrer feels he came into his own, in both mastery of skill and individuality of style. After reaching this benchmark, he succeeded not only in developing the unique and spectacular TorusRing™, but also in cutting one of the world's largest gemstone pendant. Together, he and Lawrence Stoller carved the Bahia, a stunning 193.3 kg. This glorious tribute to the artistry of gem carving hangs in the gallery at the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California. Today, you have the opportunity to add an original Glenn Lehrer jewel to your collection.
