A Finger Mate Shank offers a brilliant solution for large or arthritic knuckles. A hinged locking mechanism provides easy-on, easy-off, as well as eliminating twisting and turning. All adding up to the perfect fit for comfort and security.
History of the Finger Mate Shank
In Christmas 1963, New York jeweler Joseph Kelrick sold a beautiful diamond ring to his best customer. A week later, she brought it back with reluctance. She loved the ring, but she found it difficult to pass it over her knuckles. Furthermore, once she forced it into place, it spun freely around her finger. Joe tried everything to correct these problems for her. He adjusted the size several times, hoping to find the perfect fit, to no avail. Fearing the loss of his first big sale of the year, Joe took to his basement workshop on evenings and weekends to devise a solution. One by one he tackled the design issues. First of all, he devised a way to bend a hollow tube of gold without it collapsing. Next he devised a catch-and-spring locking mechanism made of gold. A year and countless prototypes later, he finally devised a working model of the Finger Mate Shank. (source)How Does It Work?
A ring's shank comprises the bottom curve leading up on either side. This part of the ring generally remains unseen, unless the ring twists out of proper position. A Finger Mate Shank replaces the lower half of a ring with a specialized two-position locking mechanism. This allows the ring to open and expand by up to four sizes for easy passage over the knuckle. (source) With its fully automatic locking mechanism, the Finger Mate features zero buttons to push and no obnoxious flaps or wires. A bridge forms between the adjustable shank and the shoulders of your original ring, offering smooth and seamless comfort. With several styles and widths to choose from, Finger Mate Shanks suit just about every ring type. Made of either 14k white or yellow gold, or platinum, the locking mechanism features a concealed spring which prevents the ring from opening too far. This safety spring allows expansion of up to four sizes and features a two-position catch which allows for daily half-size adjustments when needed. (source) Opening the ring is simple. Gently pull up on the top of the ring to release the lock. To close it, push it back down and gently squeeze the sides of the ring to engage the lock.
