In Christmas 1963, New York jeweler Joseph Kelrick sold a beautiful diamond ring to his best customer. A week later, she brought it back with reluctance. Joe tried everything to correct these problems for her. He adjusted the size several times, hoping to find the perfect fit, to no avail. Fearing the loss of his first big sale of the year, Joe took to his basement workshop on evenings and weekends to devise a solution. One by one he tackled the design issues. First of all, he devised a way to bend a hollow tube of gold without it collapsing. Next he devised a catch-and-spring locking mechanism made of gold. How Does It Work?

A ring's shank comprises the bottom curve leading up on either side. This part of the ring generally remains unseen, unless the ring twists out of proper position. A Finger Mate Shank replaces the lower half of a ring with a specialized two-position locking mechanism. This allows the ring to open and expand by up to four sizes for easy passage over the knuckle.
