Not surprisingly, much of the meaning and symbolism associated with the sea-blue stone comes from ancient mariners and seafarers.

The Sailor's Stone

The ancient Greeks and Romans relied on aquamarine to protect their sailors. These ancient mariners brought the sea-green crystals on board to ensure safe passage to and from their destinations. In particular, they believed aquamarine would protect them during storms. At night, these same sailors slept with the crystals under their pillows, ensuring a sound and restful sleep. Worn as a talisman, around the neck or on the finger, the aqua stones might also calm the waves. Ancient Greek seafarers sometimes tossed their aquamarines into the surging waters as an offering to Poseidon. Placing their hope in the sea God's favor, they held fast awaiting the calming of the seas. Celebrated as the mermaid's prized possession, sailors believed wearing the stone not only provided them protection from death at sea, but also curbed the onset of seasickness.

Aquamarine Symbolism

Aquamarine is also associated with tranquility, serenity, clarity, and harmony. As the first of the spring birthstones, the sea blue crystal represents transformation and rebirth. It embodies youthful vitality, purity, loyalty, hope, and truth. Of course, aquamarine must possess all the healing qualities of the seas. As such, some believe it holds the power to heal the oceans, as well as the land. The Ancient Egyptians wore aquamarine carved as animals to preserve their vital energy,  warding off premature demise. Ancient Romans wore aquamarine amulets to cure laziness and procrastination, as well as for protection. In addition, they used the blue-green crystal as a visual aid for those with eyesight impairment. Indeed, rumors abound that Emperor Nero used them to improve his sight.

The Stone of Courage

The power of March's birthstone carries into personal development, as well. Crystal experts believe the stone of the sea enables us to access our deep inner wisdom. This, in turn, empowers us to remain true to our deepest values, expressing our feelings openly and communicating with others from the heart. Not only does this activate our inner courage, but it inspires creative expression and enhances artistic skills. It is this alignment with oneself that promotes empathy and kindness. These qualities, of course, engender trust and peace with others. In addition to the symbolism and meaning attributed to it, aquamarine is absolutely gorgeous.
