This past spring, the unprecedented success of the Hong Kong auctions through Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonham's provide ample evidence that money for art and luxury goods is flowing more and more freely in China. Records were smashed and bidding wars were fierce, as some of China's most influential people made their mark on history by purchasing some of the premiere offerings at these magnificent jewelry auctions. It is safe to estimate that a portion of the revenue flowing through the hands of China's elite is coming from the country's burgeoning film industry. According to reports dated March of this year, China ranked #2 in the film industry, with box revenues of $2.7 billion in 2012, a 30.2% increase from the prior year. Just last week, Tiffany Chen, vice chairman of China Star Entertainment Ltd., announced that she was the anonymous Asian bidder who took home the dazzling briolette diamond pendant and necklace, which sold for a staggering $11.15 million at Christie's Hong Kong sale on May 28, 2013. Not only was the pendant the top lot at the Hong Kong sale, but it set a world record for briolettes sold at auction, commanding a staggering $148,000 per carat. China Star Entertainment Ltd. is one of Hong Kong's largest media production companies. Established in 1992, by film producer, Charles Heung, and his wife, Tiffany Chen, the company has produced many award-winning Cantonese films and television dramas, starring some of China's most celebrated stars, including Jet Li, Andy Lau, Gigi Leung, and Cecilia Cheung. Tiffany Chen announced that she has named the magnificent diamond "China Star" (sometimes referred to as the Star of China diamond) in honor of the company she and her husband have nurtured into a thriving success for China's flourishing film industry.
